Common Mistake: Serving Too Much Alcohol

 |  | Comments Off on Common Mistake: Serving Too Much Alcohol

Dear Readers,

These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find a wedding without a fully stocked open bar.  While there are plenty of folks who can handle their intake, others have more difficulty knowing when to stop sipping and this can make for uncomfortable, embarrassing, and even dangerous situations.

I once attended a wedding where the groom got so  drunk that he made several inappropriate remarks about his mother-in-law’s cosmetic surgery to her face, in front of  his guests.  Another time, I witnessed a nervous bride consume so much wine that her father had to all but carry her down the aisle.   I have also done weddings where the guests toast under the assumption of “the drunker, the better.”  In some cultures it is even customary to put a bottle of vodka on each individual table.

While I adhere to the belief that the art of entertaining is providing your guests with everything they need (and more), I often find myself conflicted about this topic.  I worry about serving too much alcohol at a wedding or celebration.  Being a recovering alcoholic, I do not feel that I am the right person to comment on this issue and I would really like to hear your opinion on the matter.

Do you feel it is our right (even responsibility) to deny certain guests more alcohol if they are too drunk?  How do you deal with drunken guests?
Please do share your thoughts.
