Dear Preston: I Feel Blocked

 |  | Comments Off on Dear Preston: I Feel Blocked

Dear Preston,

Thank you so much for your wonderful blogs.  I find so many of your posts helpful both personally and professionally.  I wanted to ask you how you stay so creative after so many years.  It seems like everything you do is new and different.  As a designer, I find that I get “blocked” at times and it can be a bit depressing.  Any tips?

Blocked

Dear Blocked:

Thank you so much for your kind words.  Having been in the business for over 30 years, I can assure you that I have had my moments as well.  As artists, we are constantly expressing.  It is important to remember that, just as we put out,  we must also take things in.  One of the ways I do this is by connecting with nature.  I love to take walks in Central Park, to be near the ocean, and to stare at a tree and allow my mind to explore the possibilities.  The word “blocked” suggests a feeling of being stalled.  I have found the best way to get the wheels spinning again is to get up and move.

One thing I would like say is to do your best not to allow a quiet moment to convince you that your best days are behind you.  All artists go through this (hence “writers block”) and it is a part of the process.  Just do your best to remain open to the colors, smells, sights and bits of wisdom around you.  I am confident that what you worry has been lost will be rediscovered, and better than ever.

Readers, what do you do when you feel blocked?  Please share your tips with us!

Blessings,

Preston
