Dear Preston,

I own a growing event company, and I have three very efficient managers working for me. My managers are responsible for setting their own prices and estimates. One of them, however, has been with my company for less than a year, and I suspect he’s inflating prices to get kick backs from our vendors. I don’t have any proof, but my gut tells me I’m right. What should I do?

Sincerely,
A Suspicious Boss

Dear SB,

Listen to your gut.

Some time ago, I found myself in a similar situation with a much trusted employee. They left my company, but while they were working for me I was suspicious something was amiss… I just didn’t have any way to prove it. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out how right I was until after they were long gone. Even then, it was only by accident I reailzed what had been going on; this person was really good at covering their tracks.

If I were you, I’d fire this manager. That might seem unfair, especially since you don’t have proof, but, when I think back on my own experience, I wish I’d trusted my instincts — I would have saved my company a great deal of money.

Dear Readers, am I being too quick to judge? What would you do?
