Dear Preston: My Boss Made Me Work For Free

Dear Readers,

I received this comment on one of my blogs and it elicited  a very strong reaction.  I was hoping to get your opinion on the matter.

I have been betrayed.  I was the lead designer and the only one who met with the bride.  I ordered and made flowers, shopped for the items that were needed, and set up on Sunday.  Everything was perfect with the exception of 1 paper lantern (there was blue oriental writing on it). The bride wanted an adjustment and the owner accommodated this request and took it out of my pay.  As a result, I did all of my work for free.

Dear Anonymous:

I am a proponent of being accountable for your actions, but this is outrageous.  I am not even sure if this is legal.  One of the responsibilities of all business owners is to prepare for setbacks.  Quite frankly, I think your boss should be ashamed of themselves. If what you are saying is true, I would suggest that you give strong consideration to leaving this job, regardless of your circumstances.  In my opinion, you are working for an unfair person who had very little regard for others.  I can understand your feelings of betrayal.  In my own business, I remind myself that the the people who work for me are human beings, and like me, they will make mistakes.  I plan for as many of these mistakes as possible and have a back-up plan.  I also do my best to give my staff members the benefit of the doubt and remind myself that they have already put in a lot of time.

Question: I know there is always two sides to every story, but taking this at face-value, what do you think?  Is this good business practice?  Would you continue working for this boss?
I look forward to reading your comments.
