Dear Readers:
One of the things I always tell my brides to do is to to give clear direction and then allow the talented vendors she has hired to do their job while she enjoys her special day with her loved ones. More often than not, my beautiful clients listen to me, but there are moments when I watch–with a heavy heart– as a bride spends more time worrying about the food, decor, small mishaps that no one really notices, and whether or not her mother-in-law is having a good time than she does savoring a once-in-a-lifetime moment with the person she has chosen to spend the rest of her life with.
These are the ones who always come back and tell me, “You were right… I missed my own wedding.” I have to be honest: My heart always breaks a little when I hear this.
Very recently, I was discussing this very topic with one of my former clients when she thanked me for reminding her not only to attend her wedding, but to actually enjoy it. “Preston, it sounds so simple, but it was harder to achieve than it should have been,” she said. This statement hit me. It is often harder than it should be to let go of control and actually savor the sweet moments we have worked so hard for. It’s a bit of a catch-22, isn’t it? We exhaust ourselves in order to achieve a beautiful event, party or wedding, but get so afraid of not having the perfect experience we have worked so hard for that we miss it all together.
Today, I would like to ask you: do you have trouble savoring the fruits of your labor? Why/Why Not? What is your best advice for finding the balance between work and play?
Blessings,
Preston
