Dear Readers,
I hope you are all having a nice Thursday and starting to wrap up a productive week.
Today, I would like to talk about the downside of perfectionism. Though I have great respect for wanting to do your best each and every day, the reality is that there will be times when we will fall short of our standards, and even those of our clients. How we deal with these moments often has a profound impact on our business. There are those who can fall and “pick themselves up, dust themselves off and move forward” quickly, but many among us allow these setbacks to deflate them entirely, thus holding them back for an indefinite period of time.
Different people deal with time in this “purgatory” in different ways. Some hide behind their ego, getting angry and defensive whole blaming those around them. There are others who find themselves deflated and questioning their abilities, and some who allow themselves to be paralyzed by the fear that the setback will wipe all of the successes from the memory of their clients and colleagues.
I have experienced all of these moments in my 30-year career. I think all of us have or will. What I have learned over time is that the most productive way to to deal with this “down time” is to think of ways you can amend the situation and do better in the future. As Benjamin Disraeli said, “Great services are not cancelled by one act or a single error.”
Question: I would like to as you how it is that you deal with setbacks and how you “pick yourself up” and move on? Are you better than you used to be? If so, please share how. Would you like to learn to “bounce back” better? Share your story.
Blessings,
Preston
