Dear Preston:
I am a single parent of one who manages to survive by working at a legal office. Two years ago, I started working with a florist on the weekends. It was through this part time position that I realized that I was an artist. This inspired me to take two floral courses and have learned a great deal about running a floral business. My parents have offered to help me start my own business and I wondered if you had any advice for me as a newcomer?
Sincerely,
Better Late Than Never
Dear BLTN:
Congratulations! Let me be the first to welcome you to the event business. I really love that you had the courage to follow your creative dreams. Though each of us are walking our own journey, I will share the advice I wish someone had shared with me when I was just starting out.
Find Your Own Unique Calling: You are on a journey of creating an identity. Your first step is to work on identifying and cultivating the skills and vision that makes you different. Not better, just different. This is what will set you apart. Remember not to try and rush this process. Like everything worth having, it takes time.
Don’t Compare: I know this might be difficult, but try not to compare yourself to others, especially to those who have been doing this for a very long time. Comparisons will only frustrate you and make you want to give up and quit. Focus instead on creating a business based on authenticity and your own special vision.
It Takes Time To Make a Profit: I am so glad that your parents are giving you a helping hand, as it might be a while before you start showing a profit. Do not be discouraged; this is not uncommon with any start-up business.
Surround Yourself With Positive and Supportive People: Be weary of dream killers. I was told by more than one friend that I will never make money selling flowers.
Focus on Lessons, not Mistakes: We have all made mistakes, but when we see them on lessons, we grow and are able to identify what not to do next time. See your “mistakes” as gifts from the universe and as ways to become the best version of yourself.
Expect Bad Days: We all have them, but the worst thing to do is to misinterpret a bad day as a bad career decision. Never, and I mean never, give up, and I can almost guarantee your success. It may not look like what you think it will, but that’s the beauty of a journey.
Believe In Yourself: I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed. You are going to have great days and not so great days. Never and I mean never give up, and I can guarantee you success. Good luck.
Question: What advice would you give to “Better Late”. Is your goal to be the “best” in your industry or to put out a unique and authentic product? Why?
Blessings,
Preston
