Worth The Cost?

“The world is waiting for your loving no.”– Byron Katie.

There are times when it is only by saying “no” that we can concentrate on things that are truly important to us. I use to think that I needed to accept every single situation and invitation that came my way. After years of exhaustive frustration, I began to understand the importance of standing up and saying, “No, this is not right.”

Like so many important things, this is easier said than done.

As you might know, I live in New York City. Very recently, I was on the receiving end of a very interesting call from a client who is visiting Los Angeles. The client asked me to fly (at my own expense) to meet them on the west coast.  They were very clear that I would be one of several designers they would be meeting with.

I told them that I would be very interested in meeting and speaking with them and suggested they cover my travel costs. They were outraged.

I am conflicted. Should I take two days out of my (very busy) professional life and pay a couple thousand dollars to meet with a client who may or may not hire me and see it as an investment in my bid for a potentially “big job” or should I simply decline?

I’d love your advice on this.

I look forward to reading your comments.
